The series was initially inspired by my fascination with Cotard’s syndrome — a delusional belief that one is dead or missing organs — and the history of the New England vampire panic, in which folk belief held that consumption (tuberculosis) could be cured by exhuming the last person to have died from the illness and ritually burning their heart.
The images incorporate themes of longing and loss – for things like a love unfulfilled or a life unlived - and the ways in which these feelings of desire, anger, and surrender can be embodied.
